"What if"

Ah… the “What if” question.

What if I had chosen that, instead of this?What if I had followed my heart… or never followed it at all?

The street is quiet. A single lamppost spills its light on the wet pavement. An old man walks alone, his steps slow, his head slightly bowed.

You can almost hear his thoughts. And then, in the corner of his eye — or perhaps only in his mind —he sees a younger man walking beside a woman in a red dress. They move close, their shoulders almost touching.

Perhaps they are strangers. Or perhaps they are him — and her — in another life.

Perhaps there is no couple at all, only the old man’s imagination, filling the night with the ghost of a choice never made.

And as he passes under the lamppost, the thought lingers like a shadow:

What if…
