How to Display Art at Home: Simple Tips to Make Your Paintings Shine

Updated: Aug 19

Bringing art into your home is one of the best ways to add personality, warmth, and inspiration to your space. But sometimes, knowing how to display paintings so they truly shine can feel a little tricky. Don’t worry — with a few simple tips, you can turn any wall into a mini-gallery that highlights your favorite pieces beautifully.

1. Choose the Right Spot: Pick a wall or area where your painting can be seen and appreciated easily. Living rooms, bedrooms, hallways, or above a fireplace are popular

choices. Avoid places with direct sunlight — over time, UV rays can fade colors.

2. Consider Eye Level: Hang your paintings so the center of the artwork is roughly at eye level — about 57 to 60 inches from the floor. This helps create a comfortable viewing experience, whether you’re sitting or standing.

3. Frame Thoughtfully: A frame can either complement or distract from your painting. Choose frames that match the style and colors of your artwork and the room.

But frames aren’t always necessary. Many artists — including myself and Yvoni — often prefer frameless works, just like galleries do. Our paintings are painted on the sides, allowing for a clean, modern presentation that lets the artwork breathe and keeps the focus on the painting itself.

Of course, framing is always an option if you prefer a more traditional look.

4. Play with Groupings: Don’t be afraid to mix and match! Grouping several smaller pieces creates a dynamic look. You can arrange them symmetrically or go for a more eclectic feel. Maintain consistent spacing to avoid a cluttered appearance.

5. Lighting Matters: Lighting can truly transform the way your art looks and feels in a room. Natural light is wonderful, but avoid harsh direct sunlight, as it can fade your artwork over time.

If you use picture lights or spotlights, remember: these don’t have to be aimed only at the center of the painting. Instead, you can direct the light wherever you want to emphasize a particular focal point — whether it’s a detail, texture, or a specific area that tells the story of the piece. This flexibility helps bring your artwork to life in a way that’s uniquely yours.

6. Give It Space: Allow your artwork to breathe. Don’t overcrowd the walls — each piece deserves its moment. Sometimes, less really is more.

7. Trust Your Instincts: At the end of the day, your home is your gallery. If a piece makes you happy and feels right where it is, trust that feeling.

Displaying art is not just about decoration — it’s about creating a space that reflects your personality and passions. I hope these tips inspire you to bring your paintings (or your favorite art) into the spotlight!
